Forage for your Farm

March 2024

The forage on your farm affects your livestock's performance and bottom line. Select a forage species or mixture suited to your specific needs and geographic location for the best results.

Spring seeding (mid-April to June) provides the best chance of establishment due to reduced winterkill, weed competition, and better use of spring moisture. A firm seedbed is needed for good forage establishment. This results in good seed-to-soil contact improves seeding-depth control and reduces surface drying. Planning your forage in March can lead to a reduction in your input costs. Both Brett Young and DLF offer instant discounts throughout March.

While discussing your forage order, the Grow Team at Valleyview Co-op can help plan a fertility blend best suited for your forage needs. "We recommend that our members consider their options for a fertilizer blend. When considering cost vs return, a good blend will give your forage the best chance possible for the highest yield." Says Tyler Clarke, Valleyview Co-op Agronomist.
