May 2024

Every year, portions of prairie fields are consumed by flea beetles.Their damage can happen quickly - undetectable one day, then huge patches of missing crop the next. The effect of their presence can be damage to your profits. Valleyview Co-op Agronomists are skilled at assessing fields and helping you to determine when treatment for flea beetles is necessary. When assessing economic thresholds, it is often important to also consider growing conditions. When flea beetle feeding is combined with poor plant growth during hot, dry weather, canola is less tolerate of flea beetle feeding than plants growing under more ideal conditions.

Once the Valleyview Co-op Grow Team has established the presence of flea beetles, they will establish a baseline of infestation and help you plan for your operation. New to Valleyview Co-op in the 2024 growing season, Agronomist Cassie Henderson is available to scout your property and capture ariel images. This service is provided free of charge for all chemical customers. “Being on top of the activity in your fields, allows early decision to be made and often results in a more cost-effective approach. By using a drone, we can capture images from areas that may be difficult to access on foot.”
