There’s a lot to love about straight-cutting canola — especially when you can skip swathing and head straight to harvest. But before you park the swather for good, there are a few key decisions that make or break a smooth straight-cut.

Dry Down, Don’t Stress Out

Once the season rolls on, it’s time to think about how to finish strong. That’s where your pre-harvest herbicide or desiccant decision comes in.

Now, some farmers like to let Mother Nature handle the dry-down. But let’s be honest — Manitoba weather doesn’t always cooperate. I’ve seen gorgeous crops go from looking good and only a couple of days away and a week later it’s “this is still green?” Using a desiccant can help even out maturity, dry the crop faster, and get you into the field sooner — before the weather decides to change its mind.

When you’ve got a high-producing crop out there, the less time it spends exposed to the elements, the better chance you have at keeping it top-grade.
