When to Switch to Winter Diesel

There’s no doubt about it — winter in Manitoba demands extra attention to your equipment and fuel. I always tell members that switching to winter diesel at the right time can make all the difference in keeping things running smoothly.
While winter diesel can carry you through the early stages of spring, use up your summer diesel before the cold hits. Each seasonal blend is designed to perform best in its own conditions, so I recommend drawing down your summer diesel tank as much as possible before your first winter delivery. It’s a simple step that prevents a lot of headaches later.

Tank Maintenance Matters

I see tanks left unchecked between seasons far too often. I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep your tanks full and change your filters regularly — at least twice a year. This helps maintain the quality of your Top Tier Diesel or Gasoline and keeps your operation running efficiently.

When a tank isn’t properly maintained, it can develop microbial growth — what most people call “diesel algae.” It’s fixable, but it’s also long and expensive. A little preventative care goes a long way toward avoiding that.

Our Fuel Team recommends integrating fuel cleanliness standards into your everyday handling and storage practices. One of the best things you can do is filter the fuel as it leaves your storage tank and enters your machinery. That small step helps protect your equipment and ensures you’re getting the full benefit of the quality fuel you’re paying for.

If you’re not sure where to start, reach out — I’m happy to walk you through the basics of tank maintenance and fuel handling. A bit of prep now can save you time, money, and stress once winter hits.
